  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Oven
  • 9-inch round cake pans
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Electric mixer
  • Wire rack

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until smooth.
Baking
  1. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined and a smooth batter forms.
  2. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting
  1. For the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together in a large bowl until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  3. Once the cakes are completely cool, frost them generously with the cream cheese frosting.

Notes

For an extra moist cake, do not overmix the batter. You can also add a sprinkle of chopped pecans to the frosting for added texture and flavor.
