Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch cubes, then boil them in a large pot of salted water until very tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Mixing and Baking
  1. Drain the sweet potatoes and mash them in a large bowl with butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  2. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the chopped pecans over the top.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through and the topping is lightly browned.

Notes

For extra sweetness, you can add marshmallows on top during the last 10 minutes of baking. This casserole can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated; simply add 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
