Ingredients

For the apples
  • 6 medium-sized apples
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
For the crisp topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Medium bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Apple corer
  • Knife
  • Pastry blender
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Preheat Oven and Prepare Apples
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large bowl, tossing until coated.
  2. Pour the apple mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Make the Crisp Topping
  1. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, oats, and cinnamon.
  2. Add cold butter pieces and use your fingers or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until coarse crumbs form.
Assemble and Bake
  1. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  2. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
Cool and Serve
  1. Let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.
  2. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For an extra nutty flavor, add 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the crisp topping. If your apples are very tart, increase the granulated sugar in the apple filling by a tablespoon or two. To prevent the crisp from getting too brown, lightly tent it with aluminum foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
