Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 head green cabbage medium, chopped
  • 4 bacon strips, chopped
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp red pepper flakes optional

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • wooden spoon or spatula

Method

Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, then remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pan.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the bacon fat and cook until softened and translucent, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet, along with the apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if you are using them.
  5. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender-crisp to your liking.
  6. Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and toss everything together to combine, then serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of smoked paprika along with the other seasonings. If you prefer a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use olive oil for cooking, adding a smoky flavor with liquid smoke or smoked paprika. Adjust cooking time based on your preference for cabbage tenderness. This dish pairs well with roasted chicken, pork chops, or sausage.
