Preparation
- Activate the yeast by combining warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a bowl; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt, then add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic, then place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Forming and Baking
- Punch down the risen dough, divide it into 5 equal portions, and roll each portion into a breadstick shape, about 8-10 inches long.
- Arrange the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover them loosely, and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C); if desired, brush the breadsticks with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder and parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown, then let them cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add herbs like dried oregano or basil to the dough. Ensure your yeast is fresh for the best rise. These breadsticks are best served warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
