Bread Ingredients
  • 2 ¼-ounce packages active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (105-115 degrees F)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour

Equipment

  • small bowl
  • large bowl
  • loaf pans (3)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with sugar, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour and mix well.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
Baking
  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal portions.
  2. Shape each portion into a loaf and place them into greased loaf pans.
  3. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.

Notes

For a softer crust, brush the tops of the loaves with melted butter immediately after baking.
