Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread, chopped onions, and chopped celery.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, beaten eggs, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour the wet ingredients over the cornbread mixture and add the melted butter; mix until everything is well combined and moistened.
- Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
Baking
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the dressing to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, sauté the onions and celery in a bit of butter before adding them to the mixture. Ensure your cornbread is a day old or slightly dry for better absorption of liquids. Adjust seasoning to taste, especially the sage and thyme for a classic dressing flavor. Do not overmix the batter to avoid a dense texture. You can add cooked sausage or oysters for a heartier dressing.
