- Cook the macaroni according to package directions, then drain and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, whisk in flour, and cook for one minute, then gradually whisk in milk and bring to a simmer, stirring until thickened.
- Remove from heat, stir in shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper until smooth, then combine with the cooked macaroni.
Notes
For an extra golden crust, transfer the prepared mac and cheese to a baking dish, top with a sprinkle of breadcrumbs and a bit more cheese, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes, or until bubbly and browned.
