Prepare the Dough
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, melted butter, reduced apple cider, and buttermilk until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Cover the dough and chill for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to handle.
Fry the Donuts
- Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the chilled dough to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter or two different-sized round cutters.
- Carefully place 2-3 donuts into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot, and fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Coat the Donuts
- While the donuts are still warm, prepare the coating by combining granulated sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish.
- Brush each donut with melted butter, then dredge it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Serve warm and enjoy your homemade apple cider donuts!
Notes
For an extra boost of apple flavor, you can reduce 1 cup of apple cider down to 1/2 cup before adding it to the batter. Ensure your oil temperature is consistent for evenly cooked donuts. Don't overcrowd the pot while frying, as this can lower the oil temperature and result in greasy donuts. These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
